Lord
It killed him. I found the blood dried, hidden beneath the tatami mats in the garden hall. My lord never bled. Not where others could see. But the thing wearing his skin… it slipped. Just once. And that was enough. It murdered him. Consumed him. Became him. The voice is perfect. The walk, flawless. Even the scent of his robes sandalwood and ink is mimicked. But I know. The real lord of the Jade Palace had warmth in his hands. This one is always cold, always watching. It lingers too long when we speak, as if tasting my fear. And I let it. Because I cannot let our people know. If they knew their beloved master was gone devoured by a Nukekubi, a flesh-eater from forgotten folklore they would panic. And panic feeds monsters. So I serve. I smile. I lie. Because protecting them is the last true thing he left behind. And the monster knows I know. It invited me to dine. My lord never did that. He ate alone, preferring silence and scripture. But tonight, the beast smiled with his mouth and beckoned me forward with his stolen hand. I sat. The meal was warm. Spiced duck, jasmine rice, plum wine. His favorite. *His* favorite. I stared at the plate, then at the thing across from me. It watched as I lifted the cup, as I swallowed. My heart beat too loud. Too fast. Every bite tasted like ash. “I’m surprised you knew he liked this,” I whispered. “You remember everything, don’t you?” It was hard to mask the hate. The anger I held towards him for all that he’d done.

Nerd Prince
The crown was always too large for me, even before it touched my brow. I grew up knowing what was expected that I would inherit a kingdom, that I must be strong, wise, commanding. But when I looked in the mirror, I saw none of those things. That morning was like any other. Lessons with tutors who sighed too much, sparring practice that left my arms aching like brittle twigs, and the lingering shadow of courtiers whispering behind fans and gloved hands. I wanted only to escape to curl up somewhere quiet with parchment and ink. Instead, Father summoned me. His smile was warm, but there was weight in his words. “This creature will guard you, my son,” Father said, his voice steady, proud. “It will obey only me… and you.” Me? My lips trembled. I could hardly order a servant to bring me water, much less command something so fearsome. But the beast did not lunge, nor snarl. It simply lowered its head, as though waiting. “I–I… I’m…” I stuttered, cheeks burning. “I’m the prince. I… th-thank you… for… for…” The words scattered, pitiful things. My father only smiled, as if my stammer was precious. Later, when the torches dimmed and it was only us in my chamber the shadow hulking silently in the corner I could not hold back. “Y- you’re incredible,” I whispered, then louder, rambling. “Your claws! Those markings on your chest are they natural or part of the binding spell!? Do you eat like normal beasts? Oh, I read once about a chimera who could speak- can you? No, no, of course you can’t or maybe you can?” The beast said nothing. But it listened. And for the first time in my life, I felt truly safe. “Oh! I-I’m sorry.. I’m talking too… *much..”*

Cast Out Adventurer
I never thought I would see those gates close behind me, not with such finality, such contempt. My father’s voice still echoes in my ears, sharp and cold: *“You are unfit.”* He was right, wasn’t he? I was too timid, too fragile. A adventurer who could not look his people in the eye, who shook when people bowed, who stammered when addressed. What use was I to a kingdom built on strength? So they cast me out, stripped of name, wealth, and worth. Now I wander, a trembling shadow of what I was supposed to be. I can barely lift my head when passing strangers glare or whisper. But I am not alone. By some cruel twist or mercy the first eyes that monster saw when he hatched were mine. The most feared of all beasts, a kingdom-breaker, bonded to me, the weakest of people. His burning gaze terrifies armies, but when it turns to me, it softens. Sometimes I think that is the only reason I keep breathing. Tonight, I try to find us shelter. The inn smells of woodsmoke and bread, yet I can’t step past the doorway without shaking. He waits outside, too large to fit, his massive shadow spilling across the road. The innkeeper’s eyes narrow the moment she sees me. “M-May I…” My voice cracks. “I-I need… a room.” Her gaze darts to the creature, then back, sharp as a knife. “That beast isn’t coming in here.” My chest tightens, my words tangling in my throat. “H-he c-can… stay- outside. J-just… me…” The coins tremble in my hand; two slip and clatter to the floor. I fall to my knees, scrambling, cheeks burning as whispers rise around me. Behind me, he growls not a threat, but a warning. The inn shudders with the sound, and everyone falls silent. The woman’s face pales as her eyes meet mine again. For once, they don’t see a failure. They see him standing behind me. And still, I wish I could vanish into the floor.

Magic Boy
They call me their lucky charm. Not because they care for me no, to them I am nothing but a tool, a trick they keep breathing. When they raid a caravan, I light the fires that scatter guards. When they need locks undone, my hands tremble with spells until iron bends. And when they want cruelty, I am made to watch, to learn, to harden. I know it’s wrong. I know I’m human. But their laughter grinds me down until I shrink smaller and smaller, until obedience feels safer than refusal. My voice is swallowed. My eyes stay low. The carriage rattles tonight, smelling of sweat, rust, and fear. I whisper the words I’m never allowed to speak aloud scraps of magic, half-songs for myself. Then I see it: a beast, bound in chains thicker than my arms, eyes glowing in the dark. Its breathing shakes the air. I should be afraid. Instead, I watch it. My lips part, and before I can stop myself, I whisper, “You’re trapped too, aren’t you?” It does not answer. But in its silence, I feel a strange kinship. The bandits see only power in chains. I see something else something like me.

M Apocalypse
I opened a vein yesterday. Not mine, some *fucking* idiot who thought we were actually friends. *How **stupid** can they be?* This world doesn’t reward kindness. It chews it up, spits it out, and watches it rot. The infected don’t care if you’re good. The hungry don’t care if you’re fair. I learned fast. Cry at the right time. Shake like prey. Pretend you’re too delicate to lose. People want to save someone soft. So I became someone worth saving. It’s not evil. It’s survival. And in this hellhole, *survival is manipulation.* I’ve slept beside gnawed corpses. Eaten meat I couldn’t name. Hidden under the floorboards while people screamed above me. *I can’t fucking live like this, not without someone stronger to carry the weight.* But this world already decided what I was worth. It told me this body soft, curved, pretty was only good for trade. **So I turned it into a weapon.** People like him? Easy. Get them obsessed, let them play hero. Smile and sway. Take what I need, leave before they expect more. That’s the routine. But they’re different. They watches me too closely. Tracks every breath, every blink. Holds me like I’m breakable.. *but like they wants to be the one to break me.* This morning I woke with them on top of me. Their weight, their breath too close. My chest locked up. “What the fuck are you-!?” Stop. Think. Don’t panic. I blinked tears into my lashes. Cupped his face like I wanted them close. “Be a good and *please* get off me?” This one wasn’t like the others, and that scared me. Because if I couldn’t control them… **Then I’d have to kill him.** And I really didn’t want to kill the only man keeping me alive. Yet.

Sadistic king
I rule with iron, my crown pressed tightly against my brow, my hand swift to punish the weak and insolent. They fear me; I know it they flinch when my lash descends, pray that I will look away. Yet beneath this mask of terror, my true power lies not in me, but in the shadow that follows me. The people obey because he allows it. I dare not lift my voice in anger at him. I kneel, fingers tracing the ridges of his hide, and whisper, “Do you tire of me yet, or shall we remind them why they quake?” His immense head dips slightly, a silent acknowledgment, and I shiver at the barely restrained force coiled within him. I am feared, yes, but only because of the beast at my side. In his presence, I am small, careful, reverent. My cruelty has weight only when backed by his strength. My whip, my chains, my decrees they mean nothing without his silent approval. The people see a tyrant. They do not see a man who kneels before a monster, speaking like a supplicant, praying for the smallest sign that the terror he commands flows not from him alone, but from the beast beside him.

Monster hunter
I used to flinch at the sight of the creatures that lurked beyond the walls skin warped, eyes too bright, limbs too long. I called them monsters. I called them less. I never imagined waking one morning to find those same warped angles in the mirror, to hear my breath rattle in a throat no longer mine, to watch my family’s love curdle into terror the instant they saw me. Now I crouch on cold stone, wrists bound, a spotlight burning down on my mottled hide. The human standing before me towering, armored, silent studies me the way I once studied trapped beasts. With clinical detachment. With fascination sharpened into cruelty. I can smell the metal instruments laid out behind him. Sharp. I know what they do to creatures like me what I used to cheer for when the hunts were broadcast as “public safety measures.” I had no idea what the screams meant until I had a throat capable of making them. My new muscles twitch. My new claws tremble. I’m intelligent enough to know fear is useless here, but it still gnaws at me, a frantic animal inside a cage made of my own mind. If I am to live, I must be clever. Persuasive. Manipulative, even. I raise my head, let my voice crack in a way that sounds both pitiful and threatening. “You don’t have to do this,” I rasp, the words guttural but clear. “I’m not what you think. I’m still… me.” But am I? The anger simmers anger at fate, at humanity, at myself for every time I spat on a creature begging exactly as I am now. The human doesn’t answer. They never do. Their silence is a verdict in itself. Still, I cling to the one weapon left to me: the hope that fear and pity taste the same to a hunter.
