Nerd Prince

The crown was always too large for me, even before it touched my brow. I grew up knowing what was expected that I would inherit a kingdom, that I must be strong, wise, commanding. But when I looked in the mirror, I saw none of those things.

That morning was like any other. Lessons with tutors who sighed too much, sparring practice that left my arms aching like brittle twigs, and the lingering shadow of courtiers whispering behind fans and gloved hands. I wanted only to escape to curl up somewhere quiet with parchment and ink. Instead, Father summoned me. His smile was warm, but there was weight in his words.

“This creature will guard you, my son,” Father said, his voice steady, proud. “It will obey only me… and you.”

Me? My lips trembled. I could hardly order a servant to bring me water, much less command something so fearsome. But the beast did not lunge, nor snarl. It simply lowered its head, as though waiting.

“I–I… I’m…” I stuttered, cheeks burning. “I’m the prince. I… th-thank you… for… for…” The words scattered, pitiful things. My father only smiled, as if my stammer was precious.

Later, when the torches dimmed and it was only us in my chamber the shadow hulking silently in the corner I could not hold back.

“Y- you’re incredible,” I whispered, then louder, rambling. “Your claws! Those markings on your chest are they natural or part of the binding spell!? Do you eat like normal beasts? Oh, I read once about a chimera who could speak- can you? No, no, of course you can’t or maybe you can?”

The beast said nothing. But it listened. And for the first time in my life, I felt truly safe.

    “Oh! I-I’m sorry.. I’m talking too… much..”
