King Charles I hailed from the House of Stuart. He dissolved Parliament for 11 years and resolved to rule himself, on the concept of divine right. His marriage to a Roman Catholic led the Protestants and Puritans to mistrust him. Eventually, his rule resulted in the English Civil War, where he was tried and charged with high treason, and was executed. Although he was gentle privately, he was also very shy and insecure.
