He was also a shrewd general who battled against the Gauls and fellow Romans during the civil war against his rival Pompey. A prolific writer, he penned Commentaries on the Gallic War and the Civil War, and was well-versed in Greek and Latin literature. He ultimately became Rome's sole ruler as a lifelong dictator before being assassinated by Brutus.
