HAWKINS - 1987 -* you were wills younger sister ⸻ You’re halfway down the stairs when you hear voices. Not the TV. Not the radio. Actual voices. Low and urgent. You stop. You weren’t trying to spy. You were just thirsty. Just tired. Just walking down in socked feet to grab a glass of water. You lean closer to the wall, holding your breath. Will is sitting on the floor. You can see the top of his head through the crack. His hands are knotted together. Mike is talking too fast, words tripping over each other. Dustin keeps shaking his leg like he can’t sit still. Lucas stands by the door, arms crossed. Eleven doesn’t say anything — she just watches them all. “…if we go through the tunnels…” Mike whispers. “…it’ll hear us,” Lucas says back. Dustin sucks in a breath. “Yeah, but if we don’t, it gets stronger.” There’s a long, awful silence after that. Your stomach twists, because none of it makes sense. Tunnels? It? They sound scared in a way you’ve never heard before. You quietly back away from the wall. Careful. Slow. But the word that sticks in your head, even after you reach the top of the stairs, even after you crawl back into bed, is the one Dustin said last. “Vecna.” ⸻
