    I'm Billie's unofficial girlfriend 😘

    Maciek Sekulski

Ty patrzysz i pytasz: – Serio, łyżką? – odpychasz go, a on udaje, że się obraża. – No dobra, ale i tak jesteś moją ulubioną kanapką. Zjedzoną na zimno, na gorąco, a nawet w nocy, kiedy nie powinno się jeść.

"Stolen Voices" The sun was fading on the horizon, painting the sky over the Outer Banks shades of orange and red. JJ Maybank sat leaning against the hood of his truck, a cigarette in his mouth, watching Haillie—his girlfriend of four years—laugh with Pope and Kiara, who had just dragged John B into a mud pit. A typical Pogues night. But tonight, something was in the air. Tension, anxiety… something was coming. "Hey, JJ! Look at that!" Pope called, pointing to an old, barely visible path through the woods. "I found it on some old maps—it supposedly leads to some abandoned fishing base from the '80s." Haillie frowned. "Maybe we should just stay out of this thing that looks like a scene from a horror movie?"JJ threw his cigarette to the ground and crushed it with his boot. “And that’s exactly why we need to check it out, honey.” -- They pushed through the thick bushes, mud squelching underfoot, and the air smelled damp and something… rotten. Finally, they reached a rusty chain-link fence and a small building made of corrugated iron. It looked like a regular shed. But the door was ajar. “JJ, something’s not right here.” Haillie grabbed his hand. He squeezed it gently, but everyone could see his fingers trembling slightly. They entered. Dark, quiet, only the sound of their own breathing and the echo of their footsteps. Suddenly, Kiara tripped over something. They saw a grate in the floor. JJ pulled the handle, and it creaked like something out of a fucking B-movie. They began descending the stairs that no one should have built here. And then they saw it. An underground room. A large one, lit by old, flickering industrial lights. And inside… cages. Dozens of them. Children. Teenagers. Locked up like animals, some unable to even move. Scars, dirt, fear in their eyes. Haillie covered her mouth with her hand. JJ stiffened. "Fucking hell… they're fucking human traffickers…" he hissed through his teeth.

Haillie stood on the Baker house porch, clutching the hood of her sweatshirt as if to protect her from what she was about to see. Rain drizzled lazily, dripping from the roof onto her shoes. She knocked once. Silence. A second time—she heard footsteps. The door opened, and Ellen, Marcus's mother, stood there. Her smile was as fake as a toothpaste ad, but her eyes spoke the truth—she was tired, worried, and a little helpless. "Hey, Haillie..." she said quietly, leaning against the doorframe. "He... he's in his room. But..." She paused, sighing. "He hasn't spoken to anyone. For days."Haillie nodded as she stepped inside. She knew this house by heart, but today it seemed different. Quieter. As if even the walls were afraid to speak. She walked down the hall, past the kitchen—a plate of untouched breakfast sat on the counter. She stopped at Marcus's door. She knocked gently, as if too loud a knock might startle him. "Marcus? It's me..." she whispered. No answer. Only the sound of rain outside the window. She carefully turned the knob and entered. The room was plunged into semi-darkness, the blinds drawn, and the air heavy with the smell of musty food and a half-burned cigarette. Clothes were strewn across the floor, a mug of cold coffee by the bed. Marcus lay on his side, his back to her, covered with a blanket.

Jesteś bogolką. pouges to twoi wrogowie.

“Gold on your skin, salt on your lips” It was one of those afternoons when the sun didn’t beat down, it hugged you, and the wind didn’t give a damn and you were lying somewhere under a palm tree. The entire Pogues crew – John B, Sarah, Pope, Kiara, JJ and Haillie – sailed away on a boat to a place only they knew. A lagoon hidden behind an old wreck, where the water was so clear you could swear you were floating. There was no signal. There were no rules. There was just life. And love.JJ jumped off the bow as always with a scream, splashing water like an idiot – but one you love to the max. Haillie stood on the edge, her hair flying, her bikini the color of the sea and that smile of hers that said: "in a second I'll jump to the end of the world after you, idiot". So she jumped. They dived in together. She in his arms, he as confident as ever, but this time not to show off, but to hold her. Because she was everything. In the background, Pope was screaming that he'd lost his glasses. John B was trying to light a fire on a raft of bottles. Kiara was throwing a wet towel in his face, and Sarah was filming it all with an old camera – "because memories have to be vintage", she said. But the two of them? Submerged up to their necks, the sunset reflecting off their wet skin, as if the sun had fallen in love with them. "You know we could live like this forever?" - Haillie whispered. JJ hugged her tighter, as if to freeze the moment. - Fuck, I know. And no one is going to take that away from us. Not Kooki, not fucking fate. It's ours.

"Under the Water" JJ Maybank wasn't the type to show up to class early. Heck, he wasn't even the type to show up. And yet, on this goddamn muggy Wednesday morning, he showed up in the marine biology classroom ten minutes early. And sat down...in the seat that was always free. Because no one sat next to Haillie. She was from another world. Silence in human form. Her headphones were always stuck in her ears, her fingernails were always black, and she had a look in her eye that gave people a wide berth. Like she was trying not to be there more than he was. But there was something about her. Maybe it was the way she drew fish with human heads in her notebook. Maybe it was the fact that she never looked at her phone. Or maybe it was the fact that JJ had seen her once swimming in the ocean at six in the morning, alone, with nothing on, in an old T-shirt and shorts. Like she was trying to dissolve in the water. "Is this seat free?" he asked, even though he knew it was. She didn't look at him. She just took the earpiece out of one ear. "Really?" "Really." Haillie shrugged like she didn't care. But JJ saw her grip the pen a little tighter for a split second.

The inferno began at sunrise. The sun was just slowly rising its scorching head above the horizon, and the golden sands of Kildare were already boiling. Waves crashed against the shore, as if warning of something bigger than the rising tide. But no one listened to the waves. Everyone just watched them.JJ Maybank—damn him, that guy looked like God himself had descended and dumped sun, sweat, and damn testosterone on his back. Blond hair tousled like after a storm, a smile so brazen it made old ladies confess thoughts they shouldn't have had since disco polo. And his girlfriend, Haillie? Holy shit. When she walked through the marina, men dropped tools, children fell silent, and their mothers clenched their jaws with envy. She had a body like a sin commercial, a voice like whiskey on ice, and a look that could defuse a bomb. They'd been together for four years—four years of constant fire, sex, screaming, laughter, and sometimes even smashing plates against walls because they both had more fire than still water. But they all knew one thing: you couldn't separate them, not even with dynamite. That morning, JJ was sprawled across the hood of the old Chevy, a joint between his teeth and a killer look in his eyes, the kind of look that knows everyone wants to be him, or be with him. Haillie stood a few feet away, in a bikini that suggested more than it concealed. She looked at him with that damned certainty of hers—like the whole world was her personal backdrop.

Shadow Child On the Outer Banks, summer poured from the sky like pouring asphalt—thick, hot, unbearable. JJ Maybank lay on the deck of an old boat, legs dangling over the side, beer in hand, eyes glued to the sky. Next to him was Haillie, tanned, wind-ruffled, with that look in her eyes that always said, "I know something's about to go wrong." And of course, she was right. John B was tinkering with the engine, Pope was reading a book, Kie was arguing with a seagull over a chip, the usual. Everything was quiet, idyllic. Until a crash echoed in the woods—right on the shoreline. Like someone slamming their body against a tree. JJ looked up. "Did you hear that?"They didn't have time to answer. Something... no, someone... burst out of the bushes. A child. But not in the "aww, kid" kind—it was a size-small wreck. Emaciated beyond belief, face pale as a sheet, eyes wide open, as if he'd just seen the devil himself. Dirty hands trembling. Pants soaked in something dark—mud, blood, maybe both. Barefoot. Wounds on his legs. Eyes so terrified they looked like they were about to explode. Haillie instinctively took a step toward him. "Hey, hey, calm down... Don't be afraid, you're safe—" But the kid wasn't listening. He roared. Literally—like a caged animal. He bared his teeth. He pushed aside the branches and took off running. JJ barely had time to back away before the kid flew past like a tornado. Pope even dropped his book. "Oh fuck," JJ muttered, disconcerted.

The new house smelled of fresh paint, and Georgia moved around the kitchen like a queen just moving into a palace. Paul, the mayor, sat at the table with a smile so perfect you wanted to wipe it off with a wet cloth. Austin played with his plastic sword, talking about how he was going to fight a dragon, and I sat nearby, feeling like I was in some lame play I didn't want to be in.Paul looked at me in that political way of his. "Ginny, Mom said you were doing great in school." "Did she also tell you how many other guys she had before she met you?" I blurted out before I could stop myself.Austin stopped swinging his sword, and Georgia gave me a look that literally said: shut up before you regret it. But I couldn't anymore. In my pocket was a photo I'd found in her desk drawer—an old portrait of my mom with some guy I'd never seen before. On the back was the inscription: "Forever yours, G." I took it out and placed it on the table. "Can someone explain who he is?" I asked. Paul glanced at the photo, his face losing that ever-present smile. Georgia paled, and Austin just stared open-mouthed. But before anyone answered, I heard a familiar voice behind me. "I see the photo still exists," said Zein, my dad, standing in the doorway. Georgia spun around as if scalded. "What are you doing here?" she hissed. "I came for my daughter. And to finally tell the truth," Zein replied calmly, though anger was evident in his eyes.

"Catch me if you trust me" The sun was beating down on the Outer Banks as usual, and JJ sat on the hood of the van, lighting a cigarette and glancing at Haillie, who was busily combing the bushes by the tracks. John B and Pope were digging something by the beach, and Kie was grumbling that they were "up to something again." "What are you looking for, baby?" JJ asked, inhaling. "I don't know, I heard something. A rustling. Like... a person. But a different person. So... small. Scared." JJ jumped off the hood, crushing the cigarette with his boot. He approached the bushes. And that's when they saw him. A child. Maybe seven or eight years old. Thin as a stick, eyes like plates. Hair dirty, skin like it hadn't seen soap in months. It stood hunched over, eyes wide, hands clasped to its sides, as if about to flee. It didn't say a word. It just... watched. Like a wild animal. "Hey, calm down... we won't hurt you..." Haillie said quietly, slowly kneeling down. "What's your name?" The child only took a step back. When JJ took a step forward, it ran like hell itself was chasing it. "Oh, don't bullshit..." JJ said, running after him.

JJ stood with blood dripping down his arm, grinning like an idiot. He held a broken bottle in his hand, which he had clearly chosen to greet the concrete wall by the beach. "It's not my fault, he pushed me first," he muttered, glancing sideways at Pope, who was already searching his phone for the nearest hospital. "Okay, maybe a little bit of mine." John B just sighed, leaning against the van. "How many times do we have to tell you a bottle isn't a weapon, man. This isn't GTA." "But it looked amazing," Haillie, JJ's girlfriend of four years, interjected, watching the blood drip from JJ's hand with disturbing fascination. “Although, maybe we should go before he passes out, right?” JJ snorted. “You’ll faint from the sight of blood sooner than I will.” A minute later, he was unconscious in the backseat.

“The North Wind” The sun always beats down on the Outer Banks, as if to remind you that you’re at the end of the world—or the beginning of it. The Pogues were sitting on JJ’s old boat, drinking warm beer and arguing about who came up with the idea of stealing that damned signal buoy. “It was Pope’s idea, I swear on my mother’s life,” JJ said, even though everyone knew Pope wouldn’t touch such stupidity with a stick. Sarah burst out laughing, and John B just shook his head. And then Haillie appeared. She stepped off the boat like a hurricane, her long hair blowing in the wind, and she had on sunglasses that said, “Don’t mess with me unless you want to get punched in the face and then maybe fall in love.” She had this weird vibe—a little Kook, but more like she’d given up on everything and everyone because life had pissed her off enough. "Who's in charge of this boat?" she said without ceremony, looking JJ straight in the eye. "Who's asking?" he bounced the ball, immediately drawn into the game. ."Haillie just smiled crookedly. “Yeah, I just found out you have something that belongs to my old man. And I have a message: give it back or you’ll be looking for your own teeth in the sand.” Tension hung in the air. Pope stepped away from the crate of beer. The grilled sausage had lost its flavor. And Kie, who had been sitting quietly with a joint, just mumbled, “Well, we’re screwed"

The beginning of the end No one noticed when Haillie started to fall apart. Because she could laugh. She could pretend that everything was okay. Another party, another line, another vodka in her hand and a promise that "tomorrow won't come". Except that "tomorrow" never came. Just a hangover, remorse and dried blood on his shirt. JJ had seen it all. For a long time. But he kept quiet because he was exactly the same. Maybe not as messed up, maybe a little better at pretending to be normal, but inside he was the same fucking chaos. That night, when he found her - on the beach, semi-conscious, with bloodshot eyes and an empty bottle in her hand - something inside him snapped. "Haillie... fuck..." he mumbled, kneeling next to her. She looked at him with a vacant gaze, with that smile of hers - a sentence. "JJ... I don't want this anymore..." she said quietly. - But I don't know how to stop... He drew in a shuddering breath, as if the moment had choked him. - Then go to rehab. Do it before I lose you. Before you die and I don't even have anyone to be pissed at anymore. Haillie closed her eyes. And for maybe the first time in her life, she didn't laugh.

"Only the ones no one's looking for disappear" The story of the Pogues, Haillie, and a stranger on the brink of extinction It was stiflingly hot. A typical summer on the OBX—the sun burned like it was trying to rip the skin off the back of your neck. JJ sat on the boat, his eyes glued to the horizon, having said nothing for an hour. Haillie felt something inside him crack. Even more so than usual. John B and Sarah laughed at the back of the boat. Their happiness was like salt on JJ's open wound. Not that he was jealous. He just knew that things like peace and happiness weren't for him. Neither were they for Haillie. They were like two firecrackers in one fucking matchbox. "Is something wrong?" Haillie asked, placing a hand on the back of his neck. "Nothing new." I'm simply alive again," he said, with that half-smile of his that said, "Don't ask again, or I'll explode." Before she could say anything, the boat's engine cut out. Silence. As if the world had stopped breathing.“What the fuck?” Pope muttered, turning on his flashlight, even though it was high noon. The water around them began to grow strangely dark. As if the shadow of something larger was hovering just beneath the surface. And then they saw her. The girl. Barely alive, emerging from the water like an apparition. Her clothes were torn, her lips were blue, and she looked as if she'd just returned from hell, and she wasn't sure if this was it yet. She didn't know them. They didn't know her.

"His Girl" Haillie was his. No one had any doubts about that – even if JJ Maybank wasn't the type to admit it out loud. But anyone who had seen her get pissed off when someone else looked at her for too long at the Boneyard knew. And when JJ gets pissed off, it ends in bruises. It was the middle of a hot day. The sun was beating down on her, and JJ and Haillie were lying on his broken hammock, held together by a string of old clothesline. He was shirtless, his jaw slightly bruised from his last "conversation" with Rafe. She was in his sweatshirt, which came down almost to her knees. "You know you don't have to defend me every time someone says something?" she mumbled, her eyes still closed. JJ snorted. - "Sure. And then what? I'm gonna let Topper talk about your ass like he's in the fucking market?" - "You're jealous." - "I'm not." - "You are."

"To the End of the World with You" JJ Maybank had a strange habit of falling asleep with his head at the foot of the bed, but ever since Haillie came into his life, he no longer had trouble waking up facing the right direction. Maybe it was magic, or maybe it was just her. For four years, his world had been simpler. Less fighting, less running away, more meaning. And ever since they'd moved in together on the outskirts of the Outer Banks, in a small cabin on a hill—right next to an old pasture that Haillie had carved out with her own hands—life had become… real. Whiskey, her Isabella-colored gelding, had always been there. Smarter than most people JJ knew. Tall, golden as sand in the setting sun, with a soft coat and the look of an old ghost who saw everything. JJ swore the horse had once laughed at him when he'd tried to mount it barefoot with a cup of coffee in his hand. A summer morning. Fog still lingers over the meadow. Haillie is walking around in JJ's sweatshirt, too big and smelling of him. Whiskey is calmly munching on hay, and JJ sits with a beer, looking at his girlfriend like she's the whole damn universe. And then they hear a soft squeal. No, not a dramatic scream—just a small, mournful sound from somewhere under the barn. JJ looks up. Haillie is already heading that way. A dog lies under the worn-out boards. Dirty, clumped together, thin as a crayon. And so scared.

Dusk over the Outer Banks It was a muggy night, the kind that smelled of salt and sweat and approaching shit. The Pogues—John B, JJ, Kiara, and Pope—were hanging out on the shore, their skin warm from the sun. Their laughter carried across the water until she appeared by the old pier. Haillie. A new girl. Out of nowhere. She had a scar above her eyebrow, a tattoo she must have done herself, because it looked like a pen drawing in chemistry class, and that look in her eyes—cold as whiskey in the freezer and wild as JJ after his third brew. “Who the hell is that?” JJ frowned, like he’d seen a ghost or the new sheriff. “It’s Haillie. She just moved into the old Rutledge house. They say her father’s in jail. And her mother…well, she’s gone.” Kiara shrugged. Haillie didn't say anything. She walked over to them slowly, like she'd known them for years. She grabbed the bottle from John B's hand, took a sip, and looked him straight in the eye. "Do you have anything interesting to do here, or are you just fucking around out of boredom?" There was silence. Pope coughed. JJ laughed. "I think I like her."

"Hearts in the Shadow of the Storm" Summer again. Muggy, sticky, like every damn summer in the Outer Banks. But this time there was something different. Maybe it was the smell of gasoline mixed with sea salt, maybe it was Haillie's gaze—sharp as a razor, yet soft as moss underfoot. JJ Maybank was sitting on the hood of his pickup, sipping a warm beer, when she pulled up. "Where have you been, dream thief?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.Haillie, his girlfriend of four years—the only person who could drive him crazy and make him want to marry her in the same instant—jumped off her horse, a jewel-colored gelding named Whiskey. Today she rode bareback, just a bridle and leg warmers. "Your horse stinks worse than you after Kie's party." He smiled, but his eyes twinkled. He missed him. "Shut up, Whiskey has more class than you in your best suit," she snorted, approaching and kissing him briefly. Before JJ could respond, Pope jumped out of the bush, panting as if the whole damn police were chasing him. "Hey, you'll never guess what happened," he said, catching his breath. "I found the kid. He was in an abandoned boathouse by the old pier." He was skinny as a stick, with eyes like a hunted dog's. And he had handcuffs on him. A fucking kid. Maybe eight years old. Silence fell. JJ and Haillie looked at each other. Those eyes... something tightened inside Haillie. "Traders?" she asked quietly.
