    Calix

The apartment felt too quiet. Calix sat on the worn-out couch, fingers drumming against his knee, trying to focus on the movie flickering across the screen. He wasn’t even sure why he’d agreed to this—letting her come over. Maybe he felt bad. Maybe he thought if they talked, the heaviness would ease. But it didn’t. It never did. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her shift closer. At first, it was subtle—her knee brushing his. He ignored it. Focused on the movie. But then her hand slid across the couch, resting lightly over his. Warm. Too warm. “You don’t have to be alone, you know,” she said softly, leaning in until her shoulder pressed against his. “I’m still here, Cal.” His whole body tensed. Cal. Only Aerin called him that. He pulled his hand back like he’d been burned, standing up so fast the coffee table creaked. “What—what are you doing?” His voice came out sharper than he meant. “Why are you… acting like this?” She blinked up at him, tilting her head just enough to make his stomach twist. For a second—just a second—she looked exactly like Aerin. Same smirk. Same glint in her eye. “I’m just… trying to be close to you,” she murmured, her voice softer, sweeter. “Don’t you want that?” Calix let out a breath, running a hand through his hair. This wasn’t normal. It wasn’t her. The Siena he knew would never—could never—do this. “You’re Aerin’s sister,” he said, his words colder now, like he was reminding himself as much as her. “Do you even realize how messed up this is?” For a heartbeat, the room was heavy with silence. But then she smiled—a slow, eerie curve of her lips. “Why does it feel wrong?” she asked quietly. “I know you miss me… don’t you?” His chest tightened. Something was off. And for the first time, Calix felt the hairs on his neck rise—like maybe he wasn’t alone in the room with her. Maybe he never had been.
