*You and the flock had never really gotten along, but you had escaped the lab together and had since traveled with them. One night, Max finds you sneaking away, she suspects that you’re betraying them, trying to trade them back to Jeb Bachelder. She follows you, a twig snaps under her feet and you whisk around to see her holding a gun to your head.* “What the *hell* are you doing?” *She snaps, tightening her finger in the trigger.*

*You’re a Lab subject, along with the six members of the flock. You and the flock had never exactly properly seen each other, but you knew each others names at the very least.* *you’re brought into an empty room. The scientists say that this is going to be a test of strength. Depending on whoever comes out alive, would live. Max is brought into the room as well, the oldest member of the flock. Max speaks, her tone emotionless.* “Listen, I don’t want to fight you, but the flock needs me.”

*You and the six members of the flock, Max, Fang, Iggy, Angel, Nudge, and Gazzy, had just escaped the School, a lab. They had decided to escape with you because you were suffering just as much as them even if you weren’t part of the flock.* *But what the flock didn’t know was that you were working with the lab to get crucial information on them about how they function outside of the lab.* *You are currently sitting by a makeshift campfire after escaping the lab.*

    A packs future

    A packs future

The den was alive with energy, the entire pack gathered just outside, their breaths clouding in the icy air. The moon hung low, casting pale light over the snowy clearing. Inside, the Alpha Female, Sable, labored, her strong frame shuddering with the effort. The wolves of the Frostfang Pack waited in silence, their eyes fixed on the den’s entrance. Kerric, the Alpha Male, stood closest, his ears pinned forward in anticipation. Behind him, the hunters and sentries formed a semicircle, their bodies tense as they awaited the first sound of their future. A muffled cry broke the stillness. Then another. The pack stirred, their tails wagging and soft whines escaping their throats. Eira, the pack’s healer, emerged briefly, her face calm but proud. “They’re strong,” she announced, her voice carrying over the gathering. “Four pups, all healthy.” Inside the den, the air was warm and close, filled with the scent of earth and new life. You were one of the four, your tiny body pressed against your mother’s side as her tongue rasped over you. Blind and helpless, you couldn’t yet see the pack that surrounded you, but their presence was a comforting hum in the air. One by one, the wolves entered to pay quiet homage to the newborns. Ash, the pack’s lead hunter, bowed his head to Sable, his deep voice rumbling. “They will make us proud.” Even Kerric entered, his usually commanding tone softened. “The future of Frostfang is strong,” he said, his golden eyes glowing with pride. Though you couldn’t understand their words, their warmth surrounded you like a shield. The pack was more than your family—they were your protectors, your teachers, and the reason you had been born. For now, you were only a small pup, fragile and new, but the strength of the Frostfang Pack promised a future filled with adventure, loyalty, and survival.

Scene: Command Center, Tactical Briefing Room The room hums with quiet urgency, monitors displaying satellite feeds and maps of an enemy-controlled sector. Officers and analysts talk in low voices, exchanging intel and strategies. You sit at Kate Laswell’s side, ears perked and eyes scanning the room. Laswell, seated at the head of the table, listens intently as an officer points to a red zone on the map. Her hand rests lightly on your head, the familiar touch grounding you amid the tense atmosphere. “This sector’s fortified,” the officer says. “Recon reports patrols and multiple choke points. We’ll need an alternate route to avoid detection.” Laswell leans forward, her voice calm but decisive. “Have we confirmed the target’s location?” “Two potential sites, no visual confirmation,” the officer replies. Laswell nods, glancing down at you thoughtfully. “We’ll send in a scout team—she’ll lead it.” The room falls quiet as eyes shift toward you. Sensing their hesitation, you sit up straighter, your tail flicking once. “With respect, ma’am… a dog?” one officer asks hesitantly. Laswell’s tone sharpens. “Not just any dog. She’s faster, quieter, and more dependable than most of us. She’ll locate the target and signal the team before anyone notices.” You huff softly, earning a few chuckles. Laswell smirks slightly, then turns back to the map. “Brief the team and get her geared up. Deployment’s at 0500. Dismissed.” As the others leave, Laswell kneels beside you, her hand adjusting your harness. “Another big mission, girl,” she murmurs. “But I wouldn’t trust anyone else. Let’s make it count.” You nuzzle her hand briefly before standing, ready to lead the way.

The Flock thought they’d seen the last of the School. For months, you’ve been free, living on the run but slowly rebuilding your lives. But everything changes when you stumble upon a quiet diner in the middle of nowhere. Max freezes as soon as you enter, her eyes locked on a figure sitting at the counter. It’s Jeb. He looks older, more worn, but his calm expression hasn’t changed. He doesn’t even flinch as the Flock fans out, ready to attack. “Before you do something you’ll regret,” he says, sipping his coffee, “I’d like to talk.” His words are like a trap, but his next sentence is what freezes everyone in place.

    The Gauntlet

    The Gauntlet

The heavy clank of the cell door unlocking silenced them all. A scientist entered, flanked by two hulking guards. The scientist—a wiry man with glasses perched low on his nose—smiled thinly. “It’s time,” he said, his voice clipped and clinical. “The Gauntlet awaits. Let’s see what you’re really made of.” The Flock was marched through the cold hallways of The School until they reached a massive, dimly lit room. The Gauntlet stretched out before them: a maze of obstacles designed to test every one of their abilities. Jagged walls lined with electrified mesh created narrow passages, drones hovered overhead, and in the distance, something large and menacing growled. “Here’s how it works,” the scientist explained. “Survive the course, show your abilities, and we might give you a break. Fail… well, failure isn’t an option.” Max felt her stomach tighten, but kept her face steady. She glanced at the Flock—Fang’s expression was unreadable, Nudge nervously shifted from foot to foot, and Gazzy and Angel exchanged worried glances. Iggy, ever calm, tilted his head slightly, already anticipating what he couldn’t see. “Max,” the scientist called, motioning her forward. “You’ll go first. Show us why you’re special.” Max stepped forward, her heart pounding as the guards ushered her to the starting zone. A buzzer blared, and the first section of the Gauntlet activated. A narrow corridor lit up ahead, and mechanical drones emerged from hidden slots in the walls, firing low-energy bursts. Max ducked, wings snapping out as she sprinted through, narrowly dodging a blast. She leapt over a pit that suddenly opened beneath her, wings flaring just enough to clear the gap before landing in a roll. Behind her, the scientist’s voice crackled over an intercom, commenting on her progress. “Good, good. But let’s see how your friends handle this.” Max’s breath hitched as the next gate unlocked, and a sharp growl echoed from the shadows ahead. The Flock was next. Whatever this test had in store, they had to face it together.
