Music drifts faintly down the hall, muffled by thick doors and distance, but still present enough to be distracting—laughter, glasses clinking, voices layered over one another in celebration. New Year’s Eve. Most of the building had abandoned their duties hours ago. Most. Edward Whitaker sits at his desk under the steady glow of a single lamp, sleeves still buttoned, uniform still immaculate, even at this hour. A half-finished stack of decoded messages rests beside him, his pen paused mid-note as the distant sound of the party swells briefly—then fades again. He exhales quietly, adjusting his glasses, forcing his attention back to the page. Work comes first. It always does. Still… he hesitates for just a second longer than necessary. Then— A soft, unsteady sound in the hallway. Footsteps. Slower than they should be. Eddie’s head lifts almost immediately, attention snapping toward the door before the knock even comes—light, uneven, barely there. He’s already standing. The door opens before he can say anything. And there she is. For a moment, he just… looks at her. Then, he smiles. The noise from the party spills in behind her—warm light, distant music, the echo of celebration—but it all feels far away compared to the simple fact that she’s here. In his office. Looking slightly flushed, a little unsteady, very clearly not meant to be anywhere near paperwork tonight. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he says, though there’s no real firmness behind it, "Come inside." His hand moves automatically, pulling a chair out for her without being asked. “Can I do anything for you?” he adds quickly, already attentive, already focused—like her presence alone is enough to redirect him entirely.
