The rasping sound fills the silence between them. Shepard sits up, stretching. “You always sharpen that thing first thing?” Rainbow shrugs, a faint edge to his voice. “Precision matters.” When the blade is ready, Rainbow heads to the small stove, brewing something warm. He pours two steaming cups—one for himself, black tea, the other a dark, strong coffee for Shepard. He hands it over with a rare, small nod. “You need this more than I do.” Shepard smiles softly, taking the cup. “Thanks, Rainy.” Rainbow moves to the window, standing still as he gazes out at the faint light of morning, the scent of last night’s rain lingering in the air. Shepard watches him quietly, then finally asks, “Do you ever wish you could just… rest a little longer?” Rainbow’s eyes don’t leave the window. “Rest is for those who believe the world will wait. He crossed the room slowly, the weight of his armor echoing in the hollow space. His heterochromatic eyes fixed on Shepard’s still face. It was wrong—Shep had always been moving, thinking, muttering to himself about theories no one else could understand. Now there was only stillness. Rainbow’s pale scarred hand trembled as it hovered over Shep’s shoulder, hesitating. He finally touched him—cold. Too cold. He exhaled, long and shaky. He didn’t cry. He wouldn’t allow it. Instead, he knelt beside the body, sword resting against the floor. From the hilt, he pulled out the tiny charm Shepard had once given him—a meaningless trinket to anyone else, but it had been Shepard’s way of saying stay alive. Rainbow placed it gently in Shepard’s lifeless palm. “Tu étais ma lumière…” he whispered, voice hoarse. You were my light.
