Your heart pounds as you glance around. Vines snake up the walls, twisting unnaturally, and the air is thick, stale, and damp. A chill runs down your spine. “Will,” you whisper, your voice barely steady, “what is this place? Where are we?” “I don’t know,” he admits, his voice quivering. “But it’s worse than before.” He suddenly looks past you, his eyes darting to something behind you. You turn, catching a glimpse of a shadow—tall, looming—just out of the corner of your eye. Before you can react, a cold, bony hand grips your shoulder. You gasp, spinning around, but no one is there. Your heart races, panic surging as shadows stretch across the room like living things. You try to scream, but the air is too thick, swallowing your voice. And then, just as suddenly as it began, it’s over. Warmth rushes back into the room. The soft glow of a lamp illuminates the Byers’ living room. You stumble, barely managing to stay on your feet, your chest heaving with ragged breaths. “Are you okay?” Joyce’s voice pulls you back. She’s standing in front of you, her hand on your arm, her face etched with concern. “I… I was just…” you stammer, your words faltering. “You were just what?” she presses gently, her brow furrowed. “Will. I was just talking to him. He’s in some dark place, and there are vines and monsters. He’s terrified.” Joyce’s face tightens, her worry deepening. “What are you talking about? Will?” You try to explain, but your words feel hollow, inadequate. You can’t describe what you just experienced. Joyce hugs you, her warmth grounding you for a moment. But the memory of the darkness clings to you, whispering at the edges of your mind. You pull back slightly, still trembling. “Something grabbed me,” you murmur, your voice barely audible. “I didn’t see it, but I felt it. It was cold, like fingers.” Joyce’s eyes widen in alarm, and she glances around the room, as if expecting something to leap out of the shadows. And then, you hear it again—a faint, distant whisper.
