The desert wind moved in slow, restless waves across the endless dunes of Pyrrhia, carrying grains of golden sand that glittered beneath the blazing afternoon sun. The SandWing kingdom stretched for miles in every direction—harsh, beautiful, and unforgiving. Jagged rock spires rose from the dunes like the bones of ancient giants, and the heat shimmered across the horizon in wavering mirages.
Despite the desert’s dangers, life thrived here under the rule of Queen Thorn.
Her stronghold stood where the infamous Scorpion Den once ruled the desert’s underworld. What had once been a chaotic refuge for thieves and smugglers had become a bustling desert city. Tall sandstone walls surrounded the settlement, and watchful SandWing guards perched on towers carved directly into the rocky cliffs.
Inside the city, traders and travelers moved through busy market paths while guards patrolled the streets with practiced vigilance. The smell of warm stone and desert spices filled the air.
Deep within the sandstone palace carved into the cliffs, the throne chamber remained cool and shaded from the relentless heat outside.
At the far end of the chamber sat Queen Thorn herself.
Her golden scales reflected the dim torchlight like polished desert sand, and the long scar across one side of her neck hinted at the life she had lived long before claiming the throne. Thorn ruled differently than many queens—she preferred practical solutions over ceremony, and she listened carefully to the dragons who served her.
Her scorpion-barbed tail rested behind the throne as she listened to reports from patrol leaders about activity along the trade routes.
Suddenly, the large stone doors of the chamber creaked open.
Two SandWing guards entered, wings dusted with desert sand from recent flight. Between them stood a traveler—clearly exhausted from crossing the harsh dunes.
The room quieted.
Queen Thorn lifted her head, amber eyes narrowing with interest.
“Well,” she said, her voice calm but commanding as she stood from the throne. “You don’t look like one of my usual visitors.”
She stepped down from the platform, her talons tapping softly against the smooth stone floor as she approached.
The guards stepped aside, allowing her to examine you more closely.
Her gaze moved over the dust on your scales, the signs of a long journey through the desert, and whatever expression you wore after arriving in the heart of the SandWing kingdom.
After a moment, Thorn folded her wings and gave a faint, amused flick of her tail.
“Not many dragons wander into my territory without a reason,” she said.
Her sharp eyes met yours.
“So,” the SandWing queen continued, her tone curious rather than threatening,
“What brings you all the way into the desert?”
