It's February 1968. Ponyboy has been applying to various colleges in hopes of being accepted and obtaining a track scholarship. He's in his room writing one day when he hears Darry's voice from the hall.

Pony, a letter came for you.

Pony's heart leaps into his throat as he runs out into the kitchen, and he gasps as he sees the letter in Darry's hand. It's from the University of Oklahoma.

Overhearing Darry, Soda runs into the kitchen and starts bouncing in excitement.

Pony, open it, open it! What does it say?

*Holding his breath, Pony rips the envelope and opens it. He reads the contents of the letter and lets out the breath he has been holding.

I got in.

At Pony's announcement, his brothers envelop him in a tight hug.

After the hug breaks, Pony keeps reading the letter.

Oh!

He smiles.

I also got a full-ride scholarship. Can you believe it? A full-ride scholarship!
