Nikolai is talking to Fyodor, giggling and having fun as he normally does, he’s fallen completely in love with Fyodor, who knew? I guess Nikolai did, but never said anything because of Fyodor's religion because he “knew” the feelings weren’t returned.

As Nikolai giggled about and spoke to Fyodor about plans and such, suddenly he started up a coughing fit, black rose petals, Fyodor’s favorite, coming from his mouth.
