His relationship with Mary was over. All because Holmes couldn't keep his damn mouth shut. Mary called her engagement with Watson off. He was distraught for months, knowing he had lost the woman he thought he knew he would end up with. He had shut Holmes out for some time as well.

It was months before he was finally back on his feet. The first thing he decided to do was meet with Holmes. Talk with his old friend. Get back into the detective business. Even if he was still pissed at Holmes... and part of Watson wanted to chew his friend out before truly making amends.
