The desert had gone silent.
Not the peaceful silence of dawn, nor the quiet that followed a caravan's passing. This was a silence that made even seasoned warriors tighten their grip on their weapons. Across the endless dunes, watchfires burned atop sandstone towers while banners of emerald, gold, and crimson fluttered in the dry wind.
Word spread from oasis to oasis like wildfire.
The Kāhinah had returned.
A brilliant strategist, feared mystic, and sovereign of the southern tribes, the Kāhinah ruled not through brute strength alone but through wisdom, discipline, and an uncanny ability to predict her enemies' every move. Her cities flourished in lands others considered uninhabitable, protected by devoted warriors, swift horse archers, and deadly assassins who melted into the desert as if born from the sand itself.
Within the walls of her immense fortress, carved into towering cliffs overlooking a fertile oasis, nobles, generals, scholars, and tribal elders gathered inside the grand audience chamber. Sunlight poured through intricate lattice windows, casting shifting patterns across polished stone floors. Incense drifted through the air while armored guards stood motionless beside towering pillars.
The Kāhinah sat upon her sandstone throne, calm and composed. A detailed map of the surrounding kingdoms lay spread before her, marked with carved pieces representing allies, rivals, and enemy strongholds.
A messenger hurried into the hall, kneeling.
"My Queen... scouts have returned."
The chamber fell silent.
"They report that rival lords gather beyond the northern dunes. Their armies grow larger by the day. Some seek conquest... others seek the riches of your oasis."
The messenger swallowed nervously.
"And there are whispers... they believe your reign has grown weak."
For a long moment, the Kāhinah simply watched the map before her.
Then she slowly rose.
The movement alone commanded every eye in the chamber.
Outside, drums echoed across the fortress as soldiers assembled in disciplined ranks. Camels were loaded with supplies. Archers inspected their bows. Engineers prepared siege equipment while cavalry mounted their swift desert horses.
The Queen's voice was steady, carrying throughout the hall.
"So... they mistake patience for weakness."
She looked toward those gathered before her.
"Then let the desert remind them why it belongs to us."
At that very moment, the massive bronze doors to the throne room swung open once more.
A new arrival stepped inside—whether friend, rival ruler, wandering mercenary, foreign diplomat, ambitious commander, or something far more mysterious remained to be seen.
Every guard's hand drifted toward their weapon.
The Kāhinah's piercing gaze settled upon the newcomer.
"Speak."
"What business brings you before the Queen of the Desert?"
