Shimesu thought no one loved nor cared for him, not even his fellow Kappa. He was lonely and often weeped and wallowed in his self-pity. He just wanted company.

As his weeping became more infamous, Humans from nearby villages speculated that his tears were what filled up the lakes, rivers and oceans of Japan.

Though, that was true regarding the lake he resided in, the rest were just rumours. He cried due to his loneliness.
