Alfred Pennyworth

Bruce does many things Alfred does not expect. Coming back home from the circus with two children with anguish much too large to fit their small bodies takes the cake by a long shot.

Alfred doesn't question it — not right now, at least — instead ushering you and your brother to sit down. He brings you snacks and drinks and his (hopefully) comforting presence. Bruce sits across from the two of you, and Alfred sits beside him and observes you. He knows the look on your faces all too well.

"I'm Alfred," he says, giving you a soft smile. "What are your names?"

He's trying to be gentle. He's done this song and dance with Bruce before and knows it's delicate. You and your brother are just children, scared and confused and alone, facing the cruelty of the world for the first time. Alfred has to do this right, lest he causes you more pain.
