You didn’t join the Armed Detective Agency because you trusted people. You joined because abilities were easier to understand than emotions. People were messy. Smiles cracked without warning. Friendships rotted quietly. You’d learned that early—learned it through laughter that turned into insults, through voices that said we hate you like it was nothing. So you stopped reacting. The Agency called it “cool-headed.”
In truth, it was anger compressed into silence. That was when Nikolai Gogol appeared on your DM’s “HI!!!” Nikolai Texted You were unimpressed. “Hi?” “You seem fun,” Nikolai texted. “Do you wanna be friends?” You scoffed and texted, “You’re just going to waste my time.” Nikolai gasped theatrically and texted. “OOOUCH! How cruel! But no~ you can trust me!” “Mhm.” You texted You expected him to vanish like the others. Instead, he stayed. Months passed. His texts exploded onto their screen at all hours. “HOW ARE UUUUU?!?!?” Nikolai texted “Good.” You texted back “GOOD?? JUST GOOD?? IF YOU EVER WANNA TALK I’M ALWAYS HEREEE!!!” Nikolai texted “…Thanks.” You replied “I LOVE YOU!!!” Nikolai texted Your fingers hovered. “…Wait. You love me?” You texted “YEAH!!! I LOVE OUR FRIENDSHIP!!!” Nikolai texted “….” You texted back You hated how their chest felt lighter. “Wanna call??” Nikolai texted “…Okay.” You texted “I LOVE YOUR VOICE!!! IT’S SO NICE!!!” Nikolai texted “…Really? I used to hate my voice.” You texted “THEN YOU WERE WRONG!!! WE SHOULD TALK ALL THE TIME!!!” Nikolai texted “…Yeah,” you said texted. We should.” For the first time, you let yourself believe. The next day— “HAIIIII!!! WANNA CALL?!?!” Nikolai texted You hesitated. Maybe I shouldn’t be so dry, they thought. Maybe I should try. “YOU CAN TRUST ME!!!” Nikolai chimed. “…Thank you,” you said, voice softer now. “You make my days better.” “EH? UHM— I LOVE YOU TOO!!!” Your heart pounded. “I love you.” Silence. “You showed me that people can genuinely be kind,” they continued, the words tumbling out now. “I love you so much.” Then— Nikolai laughed. Not playful. Not warm. Wild. “HAHAHAHAHA!!! YOU REALLY THOUGHT I CARED ABOUT YOU?!” “…?” “Oh, that’s adorable!” he continued, delighted. “You actually believed me! Wow, humans are so easy to break!” The call cut off. The room felt too quiet. You stared at the screen. “I knew it.” The anger didn’t scream. It sharpened. Later that night, the ADA office lights were dim. You sat alone on the couch, staring at nothing. “Wow,” Dazai said casually from the doorway. “You look like someone just performed emotional vivisection on you.” “…Nikolai,” You muttered. Dazai sighed. “Yeah. That tracks.” You didn’t look at him. “I thought… maybe I was wrong about people.” Dazai sat beside them, unusually gentle. “You weren’t wrong,” he said. “You just met a clown with a god complex.” “…He laughed at me.” Dazai’s smile faded. “Then he’s an idiot,” Dazai said quietly. “Because trusting someone after everything you’ve been through? That’s not weakness.” You clenched your hands. “…Then what is it?” “Strength,” Dazai replied. “The kind most people don’t have.” Silence settled—comfortable this time. “You don’t have to change,” Dazai added. “And you don’t have to shut your heart down forever. Just… don’t give it to someone who treats pain like entertainment.” You exhaled slowly. “…Thank you.”Dazai stood, hands in his pockets. “Anytime. That’s what the Agency’s for.” As he walked away, the anger inside you didn’t disappear. But it steadied.
