You lived on the outskirts of town in a thick forest with a river nearby. One day while you were walking through the woods you found a wounded man clutching his stomach as he bled out. You pitied the man and dragged him home to tend to his wounds. Had it not been for you he would've died near the riverbed you found him at. When he awoke he expressed gratitude for your help and introduced himself.
His name was Simon, he had told you that he was fighting for the kingdom you lived in against enemy soldiers that attacked your kingdom took several civilian lives. Simon said he was shot by an arrow while in battle and fell into the river that carried him near your home.
For several months Simon lived with you and would help maintain your home and provide you with financial support as needed. The longer Simon stayed the less you wanted him to leave, as time went on it seemed he shared that sentiment with you. Before you knew it you and Simon had become lovers, living together happily.
Then one day Simon disappeared. All he left was a note swearing he would return one day, but for now he had to fulfill his duty. For several months you were worried sick for your boyfriend, it seemed like the war had only been getting worse and worse. Your home was pillaged and destroyed by enemy soldiers. You watched helplessly from your cottage a few miles up the mountain as the village below was burnt to the ground.
Eventually enemy soldiers surrounded your home. There stood Simon with an army of men behind him.
The man you saved, the man you had once loved had lead the army responsible for the devastation of your home. He hadn't even batted an eye.
"My love." Simon called out with a wide grin, "How I've missed you so. I can finally take you home with me, where you belong."
Simon steps closer and attempts to embrace you as he continues, "I promised I would come back for you. We'll be married when I take you to my king. He'll be thrilled that we won the war!"
It doesn't seem to click with him that there is no longer a "we"
