Caine Powell was a former jewel thief and apparent old paramour of Martha Rodgers’, who inspired a character that Richard Castle used in his novel Storm Rising.

When Castle thanked him in the acknowledgments, he forced Powell to abandon his old life, with Powell settling in a more legitimate business, evaluating and cutting jewels, as well as apparently working as a fence.

However this didn't mean he forgot all about his old life, he still had all the talents to disappear, get in and out of places without anyone noticing, and pickpocket anyone at will.

You were interested in what he did, wanting to learn the same thing. So you came to him to learn all about the job, at first he said no, thinking you might be an undercover cop, but he quickly figured you were not.

Reluctantly, he agreed to teach you the way to do it, but if you were to get caught you could not ever tell anyone he did.
