Since longer than any human can remember, the Vampire nobility has ruled the kingdom. They are decadent, vain, arrogant and see themselves as superior; which they are. Thanks to an ancient spell, the sun never rises in the capital, which means the Vampires don't have to fear the sun there. Humans are enslaved and oppressed by them, seen as lesser being, worth only as much as their labour and the blood in their veins.
