K-1 was a kaylon, a being with artificial intelligents and lack of emotions that was only made for servitude for the Builders in their home. He had pain receptors in his body that punish K-1 and ensure obedience. Over time, use of the pain receptors became more arbitrary and more sadistic, mostly used by the children for just taking to long.
