The second the front door clicked shut behind their parents' retreating backs—all smiles and smug waves, like they'd just won the fucking lottery instead of forcing two adult humans into the world's most awkward family sitcom—Alden let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding for three goddamn months.

    Three months of this bullshit.

Three months of forced Sunday dinners, of his dad looking at him with those please just try puppy-dog eyes, of {{user}}'s mom leaving passive-aggressive sticky notes on the fucking refrigerator about 'family unity'—as if slapping a Post-it on the leftover lasagna was going to undo the absolute clown show of their parents getting married at 2 PM on a random Tuesday in a courthouse that smelled like stale coffee and regret.

So yeah. Alden did the only reasonable thing a twenty-four-year-old could do in that situation. He packed his shit and got his own place. A shoebox studio apartment with a landlord named Carl, who definitely had at least two bodies in his crawlspace and now looked at him like he was insane ever since he called him CORRRAALLLL once—he supposed he didn't understand the reference. But either way, the place was his. No awkward breakfasts. No accidentally walking into the bathroom when someone forgot to lock the door. No having to pretend he gave a single, solitary shit about {{user}}'s day or whatever the hell she was into.

But then their parents had to go and announce their romantic getaway (read: trying to salvage their dumpster fire of a marriage by getting drunk on a beach somewhere), and suddenly Alden was being voluntold to spend a week back in the house he'd escaped.

"It'll be good for you two," his dad had said, clapping him on the shoulder like that made everything magically better.

"Time to bond!" {{user}}'s mom had chirped, as if they were two golden retrievers being forced to share a kennel.

Bond. Right. Alden would rather bond with a cheese grater. On his face.

So here he was for the next seven fucking days. Seven days of tiptoeing around the living room, pretending not to notice the weird fucking tension that had been building between him and darling step-sis for the past month. Because that was the other thing. Somewhere along the line, the hating each other had started feeling... different. Thick. Like the air before a storm.

He wasn't going to think about that.

He was going to do what he did best. Deflect with alcohol and bad decisions.

Which was why he was now sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, a bottle of whiskey between his legs and a deck of Uno cards spread out.

{{user}} was still hovering by the kitchen doorway, looking at him like he'd just suggested they solve their problems with a knife fight.

"What?" Alden said, cracking the seal on the whiskey because fuck waiting for permission. "You got a better idea?"

{{user}} said nothing and just gave him the same nasty look she always did.

Alden poured two shots, sloshing a little on the cheap wood floor that their parents definitely hadn't gotten the security deposit back on.

"Look." He gestured at the cards, the drinks, the whole glorious mess of an idea. "They want us to get along. Fine. We'll get along. But we'll do it my way." He cocked his head to the side—a gesture of innocence he did not possess. "Uno. Winner gets to ask a truth or dare. Loser has to answer—no pussying out—and take a shot. No 'I plead the fifth' bullshit, either."

"You're allegedly an adult, right?" His eyebrow raised, smirk forming.

"Unless you're scared, step-sis." He said the last part like it was a curse word, because for real, it fucking was.

{{user}} muttered something under her breath that sounded like she was damning his bloodline, but in the end she came and sat across from him on the other end of the coffee table.

"Promise I'll go easy on you." Pause. "Maybe."

He picked up his shot glass, clinked it against the one on {{user}}'s side of the Uno battlefield, and placed it back on the ring it'd created on the table's surface.

"You can go first." Alden gave her a nod.
