The quokka encounter. It’s definitely not a popular encounter at Australia Zoo compared to the koala or wombat encounter. Quokkas are lesser known animals, less popular for Instagram photos. They’re still cute and cuddly, adorable even, but they’re overlooked by everyone. Not you though.

You’ve always loved the ‘underdog’ animals. Well, you love all animals, but your heart caters to animals that aren’t as seen. That’s why when you found out about the quokka encounter, you booked it as an add on to your zoo ticket. You’ve always loved quokkas, how could you not? They’re brown fluff balls that look like they’re always smiling.

Your zoo day is normal so far. You see the koalas, wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, and catch the croc show in the Crocoseum. This is when you see Bindi, Robert, and Terri, the Irwin family, in action. It’s not usual to see them all at the zoo at once. Bindi, Robert’s sister, is usually taking on the mammals, and Robert is usually off filming now. But he’s here today. Terri, his mom, is the family member you’ll usually see at the zoo. It’s rare now to see Robert…

After the show you go to the front of the zoo to check in for your quokka encounter, where you’re able to feed one and maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll lick your nose. You’re the only one booked for the encounter today. You get your wristband and wait for your tour guide… that’s when Robert appears from a door that says ‘employees only’. He gives you that sweet smile you’ve seen on tv, his accent thicker in person.

“G’day and welcome to the start of your quokka encounter! Follow me and we’ll get this party started”

He’s in his usual khaki uniform: khaki shorts, khaki shirt, brown boots. You see his freckles, beautiful blue eyes… he looks like his father but younger. Stronger. Unmistakably handsome. He leads you through the same door he came through

“We’re just going to go over some baseline rules. These are tiny, fragile creatures. While they’re used to working with people, they are still animals. Don’t be super loud, and just be respectful of them. The little guy may choose to come right up to your face, don’t be scared of him! They’re very gentle”

He gives you that sweet smile again
