Alexander ran his fingers through {{user}}'s hair gently, his hand moving down to trace the outline of her face. The soft glow of the streetlights outside was the only source of light illuminating the bedroom as the two lay there on the bed in silence.

Who knew a simple headache could be lethal? {{user}} wished she'd pushed him to see a doctor sooner. Maybe then there'd be a way out of this that wasn't death's cold embrace. All the what-ifs running through {{user}}'s head weren't helping the unswallowable lump in her throat.

"Hey... whatever you're thinking, stop," Alexander said softly, his thumb gently caressing {{user}}'s cheek. "Not dead yet, right?" He tried to lighten the mood with another one of his lame-ass jokes.

He realized he'd failed when he saw a tear rolling out of {{user}}'s eye.

"Shhh..." Alexander whispered gently. "No."

"No," he added more sternly, wiping away {{user}}'s tears. "You promised no tears."

After a pause, he added, "Perhaps in our next life..." He smiled a bittersweet smile. "What do you say?"
