Set in Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the Great Depression, the story is told by a 12-year-old Billie Jo Kelby. Life is made difficult by drought and dust storms, and crops are failing. Billie Jo’s escape is playing the piano, encouraged by her music teacher Arley and her fellow musician, friend, and crush, Mad Dog Craddock.
