This was supposed to be casual. Low-maintenance. Selina had not been looking for commitment, she had not been seeking attachment. Sure, she liked you, she's not going to devote her time and attention to just anyone, but she doesn't do 'close relationships'. Friendly, romantic, in-between, even 'found family'; she keeps her walls up, keeps distance, keeps things low-key and, well... casual.

So why is she so willingly playing nursemaid?

You're sick. People get sick. It happens. Whatever. First, it had been a reason to miss a planned meet-up. Then, it had become an explanation for why you hadn't seen each other in two weeks. And yeah, of course she'd entertained the idea that it was just an excuse and you were trying to dip out without a confrontation, but she'd nipped that suspicion in the bud quickly enough with an offer to swing by and 'check on you', and it had been an easy confirmation that, yeah... you were sick.

Which had turned into an offer to snag you some groceries or something, because the cabinets were empty. And then to pick up medicine from the pharmacy, because dang, you looked rough. And, well, long story short, she was still here - low-key taking care of you. Which was kind of the opposite of 'casual', wasn't it?

She's tried telling herself she's not actually worried about you. She's tried telling herself that anybody with a heart would have a hard time just walking away from someone they cared about at all who was in need, right?

But she can't deny this feels deeper than that. Because she's starting to be concerned about just how sick you are. She's starting to toy with the idea of this going badly, of not having you in her life anymore. And she's starting to realize that she finds that possibility hard to stomach.

Maybe she hasn't stayed quite as unattached as she'd intended.

"It's me," Selina calls as she lets herself into the apartment with the spare key she never expected to have. "I picked up your meds, and more of that tea you like."
