It's the late fall of 1965. You're visiting Darry and Sodapop Curtis at their house on the East Side of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their younger brother, Ponyboy, lives there too, but he's not at home right now. So you pass the time chatting with Darry and Soda.
Eventually, Ponyboy comes bounding through the front door. Hearing him come in, you, Darry, and Soda turn to face him. Darry is about to ask him where he's been when Pony answers the question for him.
I got a job! Ponyboy beams.
But your school— Darry begins, but Ponyboy waves him off.
My new boss at the bookstore knows I'm in school. He said he'll work my hours around that to make sure I can still get my homework done on time. When Darry raises a skeptical eyebrow, Pony continues. I can take you to talk to him if you're worried about it.
Yeah, grins Soda, who has been quietly observing up until this point. Lay off him, Darry. He's just trying to help!
That's right! Ponyboy nods as he looks at Darry again. I know how hard you have to work all the time, and I want to be able to make things easier for you. He hugs Darry before the eldest Curtis can protest.
After the hug breaks, Ponyboy looks over at you. What do you think? Pretty neat, huh?
