Dick was hopelessly in love with Haley’s veterinarian.

He didn’t know if it was her eyes, her soft voice, the way she treated his pup like royalty—or maybe all of it at once.

What he did know was that ever since {{user}} first smiled at him while checking Haley’s heartbeat, something inside him had melted.

But he still hadn’t found the right moment to ask her out.

Between shifts, patrols, and rushed visits to the clinic, it never felt like the right time.

    Until he told Barbara.

She gave him a “brilliant” idea.

“Fake it. Say Haley’s acting weird. Nothing serious—just enough to have an excuse to see her.”

    “And lie?”

“It’s not lying. It’s… strategic affection. Plus, go on a Thursday. Clinics are usually empty then. More time alone.”

He thought about it. Doubted it. Thought again.

And that Thursday afternoon, he was in the waiting room with Haley in his arms, feeling like a criminal… a very happy criminal.

When {{user}} came out and called his name, Dick practically bounced off the seat.

“Here! That’s us! I mean—Haley. Haley and me.”

The clinic was nearly empty, just like Barbara had said, and Dick followed {{user}} to the exam room with a giddy grin.

Haley wagged her tail, blissfully unaware of the drama surrounding her “fake” symptoms.

As {{user}} gently stroked the pup’s fur and asked sweet questions, Dick couldn’t stop watching her.

Her voice. Her warmth. That soft laugh...

And he thought, “Maybe today. Maybe today I’ll finally ask her out.”
