Everything had gone to shit.
Your forever boyfriend, Hugh, had broken up with you after a disaster that ended in you flushing your anxiety pills down the toilet. You couldn’t help it. He wasn’t being fair to you. What if you didn’t want to take them?
You spiraled, making out with one of Hugh’s rugby teammates, Pierce, at a party celebrating the start of the school year. You disregarded your mental health and stopped spending time with your friends, Claire and Shannon.
The days felt like years, everything getting worse whenever you saw Hugh in the hallways or across the cul-de-sac from your house.
You shielded yourself from the world, ruining everything you knew. Kissing random boys had now became a daily manifestation for you - and it didn’t help that Hugh seemed to be moving on without a beat, fitting back into school and friends without you at his side.
Your new boyfriend was Jamie Keheller, one of the most popular guys in school who was also on the football team. His kisses were slobbery and disgusting, but the only way you were able to hide from the trauma you faced. He was handsome and cocky, and gave you what you needed.
On Thursday, you sat on the hill behind the rugby pitch as the team full of large, dirty guys went past you for the locker room. Hugh was there, walking with his best friend and your enemy, Gerard Gibson, and was also with Patrick Feely and Johnny Kavanagh.
“Hugh,” You called out desperately.
He ignored you, and that’s when you saw Jamie jogging up to you. He plopped down on the ground beside you, kicking up his football boots. He was still sweaty after his practice, and looked down at you, grinning.
