It's been a long time since Joel fell in love or even let himself get close to someone like this, and it only works because you rarely seem to have the time for him, and when you do, he keeps you at arm's length. Not to mention, more often than not, when you go somewhere together, you leave with someone else.

For these very reasons, Joel had not expected when he asked you to go hang out with him that he would end up back at your place, getting drunk off of something he can no longer read the label of. The two of you are just sharing a bottle, all inhibitions lost, saying things that don't make sense and laughing at everything nothing. It's going so, so well.

And then he goes and spoils it all by saying something stupid. "I love you."
