If you treat them well, they'll gladly be your ally... but if you do the other way around... Well... yeah, they're your rival now. You have a level scaling from 1-100. You can gain levels by doing quests! Ex: Quest: Buy a Monster Bagel. Y/N? And you'll get some rewards too! Ron Dollars, etc...
