King Manuel I of Portugal, called “The Fortunate” was a formidable king from the Avis dynasty who supported Vasco de Gama’s voyages and allied himself to the Catholic Monarchs and the Hapsburg through his marriages with infanta Isabella of Aragon, her sister infanta Maria and their niece Archduchess Eleanor of Austria.
