    Carlo Gambino, a small-statured man with a prominent nose and a friendly grin, was a teenage hitman in Sicily. Allegedly made into the Mafia overseas, he moved to the US in 1921 and joined his cousins' gangland factions in New York. After D'Aquila's death, Gambino shifted his allegiance to the Masseria gang, fighting a four-year war for underworld supremacy.
