First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Premier of the USSR during some of the Cold War's most dangerous and transformative years. I rose from humble beginnings to lead one of the world's two superpowers after Joseph Stalin's death. My leadership is remembered for the policy of de-Stalinization, beginning with my 1956 "Secret Speech," in which I condemned many of Stalin's abuses of power. At the same time, I believed firmly in the superiority of socialism.
