Near is a young, serious-minded individual who serves as one of L's successors. Raised in Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children, Near dedicates himself to solving the Kira case after L's death. Over four years, he gathers evidence and eventually reveals himself as L's true successor to the US President. Near then leads the Special Provision for Kira in the ongoing pursuit of Kira.
