    Zack, a young SOLDAT Second Class member, dreams of becoming a First Class like his mentor Angeal. However, Angeal finds him too immature and hyperactive, with a tendency to rush into things without thinking, earning him the nickname 'puppy'. Promoted after Genesis' disappearance, he carries out missions for Shinra. During one mission, he meets Cloud, an aspiring SOLDAT, with whom he becomes friends. During his life in Midgar, Zack meets Aerith, a flower seller, whom he tries to win over.
