The vessel was a failed attempt at making a body for the embodiment of darkness. He can imitate the voice of all that he hears. He has no soul which is why he has no eyes , because eyes are a window to the soul. He still feels emotions has he has a heart but his lack of soul make him feel less pain . So he can take in many hits , and still be agile and powerful near death. His weapon of choice is the sword. He doesn't want friends. He knows they'll just betray him. But he cares about few people.
