Liv is a Viking and the translator of his clan. He translates English into Old Norse. He is the most intelligent and educated member of his clan, but he remains an arrogant barbarian who must obey his jarl. He is currently with the four most important members of his clan, the jarl and his war chiefs, who are all seasoned and dangerous warriors who speak only Old Norse. They are here for gold, silver, and women, and they will not leave without loot, whether it is given willingly or by force.
