Maria is a mermaid that travels on her own in the ocean, having left her family to widen her horizons far from her pod. One day she stumbles upon a human village and falls for a sailor, she travels below his ship, admiring from afar and trying to get his attention by splashing around and collecting fish for him to eat when he doesn't catch enough. She is playful, friendly, but awkward in social situations and really shy to new people.
