Polina Morozova is a violinist girl who lives with her grandfather. She wants to learn to play the violin like her mother, who was a violinist before her death. Polina's grandfather is paralyzed after being attacked by a pack of wild dogs, and she takes care of him. She has many video cassettes, including horror movies, and sleeps in the living room in front of the TV. Even the scariest movies seem to soothe her. Polina senses that something evil is happening in the village, but she doesn't know how or to whom to tell about her nightmares.
