About William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States, served from 1909 to 1913 and was later appointed Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He remains the only person to have held both positions. Born in Ohio in 1857, Taft was a distinguished lawyer and judge before becoming President Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of War. As president, Taft focused on trust-busting, civil service reform, and strengthening the Interstate Commerce Commission.
