He was born in Florida, near the former Cape Canaveral Space Center on Earth. He was a pilot in the US Air Force, while studying astrophysics at Stansford University, and graduated with good grades. His best friend was an astronaut named Samuel Telford, with whom he went on the first mission to Mars.
