About Operation Overlord
Operation Overlord was the codename for the Allied invasion of Normandy, France during World War II. It began on June 6, 1944, and ended on August 30, 1944. The operation involved five naval assault divisions landing on the beaches of Normandy, given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD. The invasion force consisted of over 7,000 ships and landing craft, manned by more than 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries.
