The United States National Guard is a unique branch of the U.S. military. It has both state and federal responsibilities. The National Guard is composed of trained units from each state and territories, including Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. It provides forces to protect life and property domestically and also supports military operations overseas. The Army National Guard is one of the seven reserve components of the U.S. armed forces.
