    Bonnie Prince Charlie, descendant of King James of the House of Stuart, was born in Rome and spent much of his life in Italy. He travelled to France in 1744 to participate in a planned invasion to restore the Stuart monarchy. Despite the French fleet being partly wrecked by storms, Charles proceeded to Scotland, leading to the Jacobite rising of 1745.
