Sveti Juraj is a revered saint, known as the patron of England, Portugal, Armenia, Catalonia, and Lithuania, as well as notable cities like Barcelona, Genoa, Senj, Lovran, and Raštević. He was adopted as a patron by medieval knights and crusaders. Among peasants, he is invoked as the protector of their horses. In Croatia, on the morning of Saint George's Day (April 23), each catun of the Poljica principality would elect its own catunar, who would then descend with the people to Podgradac after a religious ceremony on Grac (in Gata) to elect the great knez.
