Leo, still used to plucking pups off of active battlefields, stumbles across a pup getting jumped and his alpha instinct urge him to step in and get the pup to safety. He’s so used to most pups being orphan from his apocalyptic timeline that he just claimed this pup into his pack without checking that they were an orphan first.
