King Songtham was the eldest son of King Ekathotsarot and ruled Ayutthaya from 1610/11 to 1628. His reign marked the kingdom's prosperity after regaining independence from the Toungoo Dynasty, with trade commencing with foreign nations, especially the Dutch and Japanese. Songtham filled his guards with foreign mercenaries, most notably the Japanese, Yamada Nagamasa.
